I have a 2004 Saturn Ion with a 2.2 and a cvt tranny. The tranny is shot. Can I swap that out and put in a regular automatic transmission?
I am not sure but I would guess it is highly unlikely without also changing the computer. I would guess that the computer is matched to that transmission.

Maybe someone else can give you a more definite answer? But I hope that helps for now.
I would say it's possible if you buy a parts car that would give you everything that you would need. If you are mechanically inclined I would try and buy a car that has a blown motor and swap the motors out. Alot less work that way

Is a 13 year old vehicle worth spending serious money on for unsure results? Yeah, you can probably find a used trany for cheap and spend a weekend stuffing it in there, but the bottom line will be someone else's 13 year old trany. You could do the same with a parts car and swap things till you had a running vehicle.... OR.... you could use that time to work some OT at the job and put it toward another car.

BTW, the last thing you want is to be knee deep in this project only to find out (in the near future) that the car needs another expensive repair. Where do you draw the line? Will it be the $500 cat converter, the $1,000 ABS system, structural rust? Just food for thought here.
So true ripe it's always been my philosophy is when a car has something happen to it in a major way like the motor blowing up or transmission goes out I'll get it repaired and then get rid of that vehicle
While that's not a bad idea my point is to back up a tad and ask the question about where to draw the line. Years ago my daughter made a bad call on a car she still owed money on. The engine blew up and even with my (slave) labor the end result was a loss based on what she owed and what parts cost at the time of sale... maybe 2 months after repairs were done.

The reality was she blew an oil cooler line so toasted the bearings and the turbo. I had the crank checked and polished, replaced the bearings and did all the labor. The straw that broke the camels back was the rebuilt turbo for $600. (my cost at discount rate) Out of pocket was around a grand for repairs, plus a 50 mile tow (a favor) so the math worked out to either... walk away and junk it for $2k loss or do the repairs for an $800 loss, but got to drive it another 2 months so cheaper than a rental. (although she did drive one of my cars for a month while I worked on it) Tough call either way.

On a 13 year old car without a loan (I certainly hope so) it's probably an easier decision.
Anything is possible as long as you are willing to spend more time, effort and money.
