99 Elantra Valve cover bolts - lorddarkwolf - 10-23-2017 05:43 PM

I need to replace one or more broken bolts in my valve cover. I need to know where to find new ones. My local parts stores cant find them in their system for my car.

If you don't feel like a trip to the dealer then you can try a junk yard or simply remove a good one and hit the hardware store. They wont be hardened and being threaded the full length is usually not an issue. The only problem you might run into is not finding the exact length so maybe a few extra washers can be used. (test fit for bottoming out in the hole) The other (and more troublesome) issue could be if they have a non-standard head size or a captive washer. (flanged head?) Example: typically a 6 mm bolt will have a 10 mm head and an 8 mm bolt will have a 13 mm head. On many imported vehicles it's common to find the heads to be either 10 or 12 mm on an 8 mm shaft size, but as long as you have room for these minor differences (and a washer?) you should be all set.

BTW, if space is limited for the head of the bolt you can use Philips head screws fitting a #3 tip, or Allen head screws which will give you a better bite to snug things up.

What grade should the bolts be?

As I said earlier, they don't need to be hardened. (graded) Standard hardware at grade 3 is acceptable, especially if going into an aluminum head.

Speaking of aluminum heads, go easy. The last thing you want to do is strip out the threads. If something leaks you can always give it a little extra snug later, but if you over do it the first time you may not have a second chance.
