RE: 2001 saturn SL2
More info is needed please... like year engine miles recent work done too it. This said it could be a bad heater core, cracked head or blown head gasket, bad radiator. Check on the passanger side of the car inside to see if the floor boards are wet, an indicaton of a bad heater core. Check to see if the oil is a milky chocolate color that can mean either blown head or bad head gasket. Also when was the last time you replaced the radiator hoses...if they cave in when hot that will cause the system to run hot... the simplest thing to check is the thermostat if stuck shut that can cause vehicle to run hot.... I recommend replacing the thermostat on precautionary side, besides most thermostats are 10 dollars or less

RE: 2001 saturn SL2
Adding to Sandman's post, the botton line is the heater will not work correctly unless the system is full....

.... and if the system doesn't stay full you need to figure out where the coolant went.

Fill it, pressure test it, look around, let us know what you find!
