Mountaineer v6 vs. v8
Hi all, I have been a long time Mountaineer v6 driver, I am now looking to get my last Mountaineer Sad it is a sad day to say the least.

Anyhow, I was looking and the v6 gets the same gas mileage as the v8 - so why would I buy one over the other?

Would repair costs be higher on a v8? Or do they share all the same components like transmission etc...

That's a common question these days and it also makes people do the math when a diesel option is offered, seeing as it's many thousands of $$ more and the fuel is also higher priced than regular gas in most states. At any rate, it's worth going back to basic "old school" answers.

It takes a certain amount of energy to do a certain amount of work so the typical drive cycle tests for MPG will give similar results for a variety of engines because the drive cycle is the same, although a diesel may show slightly higher MPG because there's more heat content (read: BTUs) in a gallon of diesel than in a gallon of gasoline.

Ok, so the next part is about how hard a given engine is going to work to do what you request of it. IOW, if a one engine has more horse power or more torque than another and you don't use it all then the engine has an easy life. Basically people choose a V-8 over a 6 banger (V or straight) because the 8 is going to be smoother and last longer provided you don't flog it all the time. The difference in the long run (simplified) is the extra spark plugs. There may be other costs and you can consult one of the consumer review publication to see how maintenance compares using fixed prices from a dealer. (comparing apples to apples)

As a side note, my brother just bought his first Ford F350 with a gas engine after almost 30 years of driving diesels. His logic was the $10K diesel option would buy a whole bunch of gas based on 3 MPG difference. He also figured the major services on the diesel listed filters for several hundred bucks and of course there's two batteries when those go bad. Parts for the gas engine were under $100 every 50,000 miles and plugs at 100k. IOW, lots to compare cost wise. He already mentioned the gas engine doesn't have as much power to push at low speed, but he kinda figured that part in advance. What I need to do ask him when the season ends is how bad the fuel comsumption sucks while plowing snow. I don't think anyone has a drive cycle test for that!

Now that I got side tracked, at least you have an idea of what you need to consider in making a choice. My personal slant might be choose the 6 if it's cheaper and bascially a "grocery getter" for the family. Choose the 8 if you have any desire to haul stuff or use a trailer. Also consider the transmission options. I haven't looked lately to see if they use the same 6 speed automatic for both. Again, read up in the consumer guides to see how things stack up.

Edited to add: Something I picked up years ago while working at a dealer is if you will be financing the vehicle the difference between a stripped model and a loaded one is chump change in the monthly budget. Typically we're talking "you can have it all" for like $3 a day more in payments. It's also easier to sell a loaded vehicle these days.
