HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
Well, this is 1998 beetle 2.0 stick shift, I took to get codes read, had all 4 missfire, po440,po116,po300, nd po301-302-303-304. since I put new plugs[one was broke others BAD] ,new wires and coil pack, when I changed the OLD fuel filter it rattled bad[came apart inside] and dumped it and ALOT black crap came out? SO, new filter and will try to start then nothing, I took fuel line off and sprayed all over good preasure, it will run on startting fluid, my thought [tell me if I am wroung] is since fuel filter came apart is there a good chance alot crap got to the injecters? and if so can I take them out check or clean?? And is there anything else I am over looking with all this??

RE: HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
Missing? It's a 17 (almost 18) year old vehicle that obviously has not been well maintained so anything is possible. Fuel "sprayed all over" may or may not be a good sign. When it doubt you need the RIGHT pressure, not a guess. Use a gauge.

Back to basics, recalling this is electronic injection so almost no way to clean the injectors properly. They either work or they don't, and there's no easy way to do a "DIY test where you don't risk setting yourself on fire. You'd probably do well to buy rebuilt units. Shop around and I'd bet you can find some cheap.

BTW, before you break the bank on parts are you sure this car is worth the effort? Compression good, recent timing belt, other mechanicals ok?

The car ran smooth and perfect when using starter fluid. Going to run a check on the fuel pump pressure. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you for the suggestions. After using starter fluid the car ran smooth and perfect. I ran it for over 3 min. Next is checking the fuel pump pressure.... Do you have any other suggestions?

When in doubt always recheck your other work, especially with so much going on. Also see if you have the injector pulse / signal at the injectors. There's a test light (noid light) made just for this task and they are fairly cheep. A regular test light may not show anything because the signal is around 5-6 volts and very brief.

RE: HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
Hello,, well here what I just did, I took off both fuel lines up by fuel rail, put gauge on seem to run when it wanted and had 8lbs one time, then nothing, and when i open valve it trickled out into jug???? I checked the plug on fuel pump and found [tell me if I am wroung] brown wire ground No 4, and purple wire had 8 volts No 3, and No 1 blue and red stripe wire had 2 volts, so is this ok and is the pump bad? I did have friend tap on pump but nothing happen???

RE: HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
The proper way to check the pressure is with a T fitting on the supply line or using the factory connection if it has one. Reading the pressure should be at least 2 bar (just over 30 psi) as a minimum and closer to 45 psi just before you try to start the engine. (pump prime) Also reading the fuel pressure regulator is problematic on this vintage so check the pump first to avoid changing an expensive part. Pressure regulators go bad more often and are rather cheap in the aftermarket so if the pump works you should test further.

RE: HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
HI, I did take the 2 lines off the regulater and clean it, was full of crap, [cause of the bad filter I took out i think?] Am going to put a new fuel pump in tomarrow hope this does it?? Like I said it runs real good on starting fluid. OH, when I checked current at pump it went to 12 volts when tried to start car, I read somewhere it should do that,, so, see what happends??

RE: HELP! engine won,t run 1998 Beetle
You can try cleaning but fair warning, it's got a diaphram that may be damaged by harsh cleaners and it's also got small passages that may not totally clear. That's why I mentioned replacing it.

Also use caution with starting fluid. Not only is it more explosive that gasoline but it can screw with your head (brain damage) and blow holes in pistons if used in excess.

BTW, it would be a great help if you got some of the terminology correct. "Current" is usually expressed in amps, as in "current draw" so a fuel pump will probably come in around 5 amps or so. If you mean "power" or "voltage" then we are talking whatever the battery voltage is at the moment. Likely that's between 12 - 13 volts unless the engine is running and the alternator is charging, in which case the volts may go to the mid 14 range if all else is good.

As far as checking for power at the pump, here's what you should see: When you first turn the key on the pump should run for about 2 seconds then shut off. (system prime) When you crank the engine the pump should have power and then shut off again 2 seconds after you let go of the key. (if the engine didn't start) If the engine starts then the pump relay will kick power to the pump and keep it running, unless it stalls, then the pump shuts off 2 seconds later. This is a safety feature in case you crash or whatever. It limits the fire hazard. Understanding the sequence of normal operation goes a LONG way toward figuring out what's not working correctly.
