brake pad sensor

Sad brake pad sensor
I have a 2001 bmw 325i, i have a brake pad sensor light on the dash, what does it mean, i checked the fronts pads & they are 9mm left, & the rear is 4mm left.

4mm isn't much so I suspect it's telling you to replace the rear pads.

Rule of thumb is to start considering pad replacement when the lining has less thickness than the metal backing.

It can be an indication of low brake fluid also.

Just remember that there are only 2 reasons for low brake fluid. The first is you have a leak and the second is the pads have worn down enough to have most of the fluid out in the calipers.

BTW, low fluid has another warning light separate from the pad sensor.
