2006 Impala Ls Hard steering when stopped.
I have a 2006 Impala Ls, when I try to turn the steering wheel in any direction when stationary it is very hard to turn, it doesnt lock up just very hard to turn, it gets easy to turn when the car starts moving. Also, it makes a hissing sound thats sounds like its coming from the steering wheel when ever I turn it when moving and not moving. I noticed that sometimes when I start the car in the morning or after a couple of hours of it not moving, theres a couple of seconds where the steering wheel is easy to turn when stationary but then get really hard again. I was thinking it might be the power steering pump, but was also told it could be the rack and pinion, any ideas on what you guys might think it is?

RE: 2006 Impala Ls Hard steering when stopped.
Has anyone checked the Power Steering Fluid level? Belt tension? Those are the first things to check. It sounds like Low Fluid level the way you explain the situation. If it is and you keep driving it that way you will ruin the pump.

Please let us know what you find.
