Need advice on timing belt change. Upper Idler pulley is not coming off and I don't want to force it.

RE: 1987 Celica GT 3SFE
Haven't done that one in particular but the diagrams I am looking at show the top pulley (just below and to the right of the cam) to be the tensioner, which means there's the adjustment bolt and a pivot point bolt. IOW, 2 bolts (and a spring) to remove that sucker. My diagram shows the only idler pulley just above the crankshaft. The other cogged pulleys are the water pump (right) and a balance shaft. (left) Due to the cramped work area you may need an inspection mirror to see the other bolt.

Thanks a lot Rupe!

I'll check it out, nothing in my chiltons or any of the other diagrams show anything but the set bolt

So the idler pulley was just rusted on to the pin. Some penetrating oil and gentle prying popped it off..
