1992 loss of power and low compression in the 3rd cylinder

1992 toyota corrolla dlx
driving it has loss of power and very rough and missing, just idiloing in driveway just very rough the 3rd cylinder has lower compression then the others it was at 85 the other 3 were at about 125 or 130. i want to rule out some other things for my friend says oh its a blown head gasket, im not so sure it could be a couple other thing right i need to know other things to check to narrow this problem down.

RE: 1992 loss of power and low compression in the 3rd cylinder
Could be a lot of things but a blown head gasket usually causes a loss of coolant, oil, or low compression on 2 adjacent cylinders. (compression leaks back and forth between them)

Seeing as only one cylinder has a low reading I suspect it's either a valve or ring problem, although at 25 years old I'm not sure if it's worth the effort and the money to get involved. OTOH, if you are in a pinch for the vehicle you might want to price a used engine from a salvage yard... but then you'd have to find someone to install it at a reasonable price, which may total up to what you'd pay for a no frills valve job. In this neck of the woods you probably couldn't get that done for under a grand, so maybe look around for a cheap replacement vehicle before you decide.

Let us know where you are headed with this and we can chat more.
