Unidentified Sensors Leaking Oil/ Returning EGR Code
2008 Subaru Legacy; Base model; 2.5i; Automatic Transmission; 98,000 Miles; Was in Idaho, now in Southern California.

As shown in the photo linked below, next to the Camshaft Position Sensor there are two sensors I have been unable to identify. The diagrams I have found make no mention of other sensors in this area. (I am troubleshooting an oil leak in this vicinity of the engine, and it appears to be coming from one of these. I would just rather not start pulling things apart until I know what it is I am dealing with.)

Also, about a month ago I replaced my EGR valve assembly because of a code P0400 I had pulled, and all was well until today when the same code popped up again.

Any thoughts on either of these issues?

Not totally up to date on Subaru so I'll cover what I know.

The P0400 is actually an EGR flow problem so likely the passage is clogged. You'll have to pull the valve again and scrape out what you can then follow that up with compressed air to clear things out.

As for the other sensors, I am finding the same as you... no good diagrams with proper tags as to what they do. One thought I had was to disconnect them one at a time to see if a gauge malfunctions or it sets a code. That would tell you the exact function!

BTW, that cam sensor can leak oil. It's got an o-ring for a seal. Looks like a fairly tight location but hearing you can sneak in there to change it without removing the VC or the timing cover. Just need small fingers.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Edited to add: The clogged passage would not be in the EGR valve itself. We're talking the small passages in the manifold and the tube over to the exhaust. Also, sometimes replacing the EGR valve causes small chunks of carbon to break free and foul up the EGR valve again so blowing everything clear fixes that issue.
