'95 VW Jetta GL 2.0L 4spd - engine acts like it wants to jump out of the car!
Okay, I know that VWJ's have had a bad rep, but hey, it was free! I'm thinking that either a motor mount (or all!) has been torn loose or the timing has gone south. It has a really loud whine and a knock in the motor. The trans seems to be OK, but you never can tell. One other thing; the damn thing has a car alarm that scared the bejeebers out of me when I (lol) was being 'walked by the dog'. I opened the door to roll up the windows and lock it up when the damn thing went off like it was an ambulance or something. The damn dog took off, wrapped me up in the leash, and was doing his best to try to drag me into the car port while letting the whole neighborhood (at 1 a.m., no less!) that there was a huge red creature in his yard and he needed all the other damn dogs to start barking and maybe all the racket would scare the creature that was about to eat me, away! I finally got to the blasted car, opened the hood and pulled the battery wires. I am not too proud to tell you that after a long search in the owners manual, my wife figured out how to turn the alarm on and off and to set the entrance timer. She is smarter than she thinks she is and is thrilled to get in the engine compartment and get greasy along with me. Bless her Dad. He made sure she had a well-rounded common sense education. Great cook, too. Anyway, any input? I haven't had a lot of time to really study it because my Merc is giving me grief. I know it'll probably mean a rebuild, or reman engine. That thing was bucking like a rank bull with a guy who had poked him with a stick on his back! Wife said that if I'd left it cranked a bit longer, the motor would have jumped out of the car for me! Oh, well, these are supposed to be our 'golden' years. ? Jump in, guys and gals. I know exactly 0 about VWs. Oh, well...it'll get me out from under wife's feet!

My wife says the cat often says,"Talk to the tail, 'cause the whiskers aren't listening!" I personally haven't heard the cat say anything except 'meow'. But she's happy in her little world, and I want her to be happy. Also, when she's happy, I can watch my westerns with no bitching! ;>)

Before you go and spend any money on this gem I suggest you run through the basics.

Timing is eazy enough to check and so are motor mounts. (just use a floor jack and a block of wood to lift with) Check compression and fluids to see if anything else is off base.

Whining sounds? Remove the fan belts and crank 'er up for a few moments. If the noise is still there look toward timing belt or it's idler pulley. (common enough issues)

Knocking sounds? You will have to be more specific. OTOH, you may stumble on it while looking at the other things.

BTW, lock the dog in the house while you work on the car!
