Dome Light Problem

Dome Light Problem
Year: 2004
Model: stratus
Engine Size: 2.4
Auto/Manual: automatic
Mileage: 120,000

Have this '04 stratus, and the dome light does not work. The interior light fuse is good and the bulb is good. The light fails to come on when opening a door, and it also fails to operate from the manual switch.

I can't find any diagrams as I guess it is still fairly new, Haynes and chilton have'nt released anything yet that I can find. I am going to start at the light fixture it'self with a test light and work backward, seeing if I have power.

I was wondering if you have any ideas off the top of your heads, a specific relay or maybe an inline fuse, etc. Sure appreciate your thoughts on this!

RE: Dome Light Problem
Hi Salamander,
That car should have a (BCM), Body Control Module; and a timer for the dome light. I would hook up a scanner, pull up the BCM, and see what kind of info you find there. If you get any codes you can post them here and we may be able to provide more information. Other than that you are most likely on the right track. You will just have to search until you find where the power or ground disappears. I think that you should have power all of the time and the BCM controls when the light gets ground.

Thanks for the question.
Please let us know what you find.

RE: Dome Light Problem
Thanks garner. I found a wiring diagram for the 2003 edition of this car, am hoping perhaps the '04 is similar. It shows a BCM, and appears as if the dome light is hot always as you indicated.

When you say hook up a scanner and pull up the BCM, can I do that through the same connector where I would scan for engine control codes as when the check engine light comes on? (forgive my ignorance, I'm used to dealing with my older ford OBD1 systems)

Once again, I appreciate your input garner, it's my mothers car, so it may be a day or two before I get to really dive into it. Trying to get me a good game plan going though.

RE: Dome Light Problem
Ignorance? It takes an intelligent person to ask a question so they can do a job right the first time. I am glad to answer.

Yes, you hook to the same connector as when the “CEL” comes on. I have only used full function scanners so I don’t know if a “code reader” will work or not. OBD-II is a pretty amazing system if you have access to a good scanner and a little time to learn the system. This could be the start to something new and fun for you. It sounds like you have a very good game plan so far. You’ve been doing your research and many times that is more than half the battle!

Post any codes that you get and we can tell you what they mean. Feel free to ask any more questions, we’ll do our best to answer them. Also, please let us know what the “Fix” was when you find it. That helps us to help the next person.

Good luck, Garner

RE: Dome Light Problem
Thanks garner. My brother in law has a good OBD II scanner I can borrow to check for codes with. Unfortunately, my Mother had to take the car out of town suddenly for a few days, so it will probably be a week before I get to really check the problem out.

I really appreciate the input, you guys are always a big help. I will definately let you know how the problem works out and what I find. Talk to you in a few days...

RE: Dome Light Problem
Hey Salamander,

Any news on your Mom’s car? I’m curious as to what the problem was and how you found it, if you did.

Thanks, Garner

RE: Dome Light Problem
I don't know if you looked inside the dome light assembly. I have a 2001 Stratus. I checked out the bulb for continuity and it checked out fine. So I removed the dome light backing and discovered a nice burn inside the fixture. This tells me that the light may have been left on over a long period or the receptacle had a short. Checking the continuity on the receptacle failed. Now I am trying to source the dome light receptacle module and hopefully fix the problem. I too, am interested to see how it turned out for you.
