Pros/cons of warming an engine up
Year: 1998
Model: Ford
Engine Size: 6 cylinder/3.0
Auto/Manual: auto
Mileage: 130000

Now that the winter is here, I was wondering, is it better for a car's engine to let it warm up before putting actually driving the car? If so how long should you let the engine warm up? What if your engine has a damaged head gasket?

RE: Pros/cons of warming an engine up
When you say "warm up" that depends on exactly what you mean. All that's necessary is long enough to get the engine to smooth out and the oil into all of the right places, which would be no more than 10 seconds if all is well internally and maybe a full minute if it's been sitting long enough for the lifters to drain down.

Now, if we were talking EXTREME cold such as sub zero weather it may be helpful to allow 30 - 60 seconds of run time before driving but I doubt the average person would see any significant change in wear on a properly maintained vehicle given the typical time span of ownership.
