Rolleyes Hyundai elantra transmission problem
Year: 1997
Model: elantra
Engine Size: 1.8
Auto/Manual: auto
Mileage: 150,000

I have a 1997 hyundai elantra. The other day I drove the car in the afternoon and the thing shifted so smooth that it caught my attention.
That evening when I went to drive it, the car would not shift into
reverse and would not stay in fourth gear. I had to disable the over drive in order to get the car back home. It also would shift hard into
third gear. I had a 1998 elantra that this happened to also, but never
found out the problem. If I can't find the problem on this one, I will sell this and never buy another hyundai again.

RE: Hyundai elantra transmission problem
First thing I would do is check the trany oil for being up to the full mark and not smelling funny or looking dark / burned.

Second thing I would do is drive it to one or more local trany shops for a second opinion. (or make a few phone calls) Most will at least offer advice or a test drive free for nothing. You may find someone with a trick up their sleeve (like a bad sensor) or someone who may be honest enough to tell you that it's shot after 150k miles.

Depending on your ability you may want to pull the pan and look for yourself. Any metal in the bottom is a sign of serious wear and probably indicating a full rebuild.
