1990 dodge caravan 3.0 W/overdrive
i recently purchased a used caravan. i noticed a somewhat noisy whinning sound comming from the rear of the van. the fellow who i bought it from claims that the fuel pump is going. i may believe him because it takes a few cranks to maintain its idle. i did have a history with a simmilar vehicle in the past having to replace a fuel pump. just wanted an opinion.

Listen right at the tank while it's up on jack stands or remove the gas cap and put your ear to the fill neck. Have a friend work the key and you may hear it for maybe 2 seconds after the ignition is turned on (without starting) or for 2 seconds after the engine is turned off. What this does is allow you to get a feel for the noise you are listening for. If you can hear it while in the driver's seat it's too noisy and probably needs replacing.

To do the job requires removal of the tank so best to have as little fuel in there as possible. The tank is also more awkward than you think so have a jack handy plus a friend to help you balance it once the straps are removed. It's a long tank and a few gallons of fuel sloshing back and forth can be quite the challange while working over your head.

You may also notice some of the steel fuel lines (and brake lines) showing major rust at 20 years old so be gentle or replace them. We're talking HIGH pressure so use the proper lines for any ones that need changing.
