New Land Rover
The 2010 Land Rover LR2 ranks 8 out of 8 Luxury Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 47 published reviews and test drives of the Land Rover LR2, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

As the only genuine off-roader in its class, the Land Rover LR2 is more than capable off the beaten path. It’s one of the few luxury vehicles in this class for buyers with a sense of adventure. However, its poor fuel economy and cramped rear seat undermine its usefulness as a daily driver or family vehicle.

The LR2 is the smallest and least expensive Land Rover. Its $35,500 base price falls in the middle of the class and it comes with standard all-wheel drive, which makes the LR2 a decent value. However, its 15/22 mpg city/highway base fuel economy rating is the lowest in its class. On top of that, test drivers find the LR2’s engine sluggish.

"The LR2 mainly targets the Acura RDX and Infiniti EX35 in price and market position," says Consumer Guide. "It's somewhat slower and a bit less agile than those rivals but trumps them and most others in ride quality and off-road ability."

If you can stomach the poor fuel economy, underpowered engine and small rear seat, the Land Rover LR2's classy interior and off-road chops might be worth it. But for most buyers, the LR2 simply won’t make much sense.
