2007 Passat AC Problem
While driving the car with ac on I heard a load noise from the ac compressor. Kind of like grinding only lasted about 2 seconds of less. Then the cold air stopped blowing and the pump pulley spins quietly. Could it be the clutch? If so where is it all I can see is the pulley. Is the clutch insied the compressor? Any help would be appreicated.

RE: 2007 Passat AC Problem
If you look directly at the front of the compressor the outer most thing that you should see is the belt. Just under the belt is the pulley. On the face of the pulley is a round disc. That disc is the clutch. With the engine running and the A/C and defroster off that disc should not be turning. If you turn the A/C on the disc should spin at the same speed as the pulley.

Hope that helps. Please let us know what you find.

RE: 2007 Passat AC Problem
the pulley has no inner disc. if the ac is on or off it still just spins. i was wondering if the clutch is inside the compressor. My wife has a jeep grand cherokee and the clutch is clearly visable on that pulley. i don't know just seems different. german technology...

RE: 2007 Passat AC Problem
I have never seen one any different than what I explained. It should be similar to the one on your wife's Jeep. I just looked at a whole bunch of A/C compressor clutches for VW on the net and they all looked the same. There should be a wire coming from behind the pulley that activates the clutch & the disc out front.

Two things come to mind. Could you be looking at the wrong thing? Could the loud bang you heard been the clutch flying off the compressor?

May-be one of the other moderators has had some experience with your particular vehicle and can throw in some information?
