Help 98 Lincoln Continental
1998 Lincoln Continental
V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140406 miles

I was wondering why every time i go to the gas station it seems like after three or four seconds the pump stops like the tank is full???? I pull the nozzle out a little and i have to pump at a crawl in order for fuel to go into the tank??? Can you please help me and tell me what I can do to fix this?

RE: Help 98 Lincoln Continental
For some reason the tank is not venting properly so the fuel backs up in the filler neck. Typically this means pulling the fill pipe from the vehicle to see what's wrong. Sometimes there's a one-way flap that has failed and other times there's something left behind in the way of debris from someone trying to siphon your fuel or those little cardboard discs that seal up containers of dry gas.

Some newer vehicles use a coaxial style vent tube, which is a hose within a hose. If the inner hose has a kink in it that can be a problem. This smaller tube may have a flap on the end, which is supposed to move freely. Shake the assemble while it's out. If anything rattles there may be something lodged inside the pipe.

BTW, the last time I had this problem I found the remains of a siphon hose inside the filler pipe and I had to carefully remove the one-way flap to get it out. If this is the case pay attention to how it's mounted as the direction is important.
