I have a 1998 Toyoto Camry, 200,000 miles. Minor leak and need transmission gaskets replaced. I was told by a transmission repair shop that if service has not been kept up that a flush and/or replacement of fluids would probaly result in the transmission going out. Is that true?

Tom, Thanks for the info. I was told I needed the rear main seal replaced and the trans pan resealed about 10,000 miles ago. I had trans flush done at a quick lube place at about 150,000. That is the only trans service this car has ever had. It sounds like all I can do is let it ride and hope the transmission doesn't go out. This is a great car, I'd really like to get another 100K miles out of it.

there is no rear main on trans. do you mean eng. are you adding trans.atf. or engine oil?

My quote from a Toyoto shop says "REAR MAIN SEAL 650.00" and "TRANS PAN RESEAL 105.00" I assume they would be adding trans fluid, I don't know about ATF. Am I looking at trans failure if I do anything at this point?

The rear main seal is in the engine and leaks engine oil. It has nothing to do with the transmission. You can purchase a filter kit and fluid and replace the filter and pan gasket yourself if you don't mind getting a little dirty. The rear main seal is another story. Unless you are adept at repairs, I would not attempt replacment of the seal. Good luck.
