1994 Corolaa temperature gauge not working

I just purchased a 1994 Corolla. The temperature gauge is not reading. It stays at the lower end of the scale indicating it is always cold. The engine runs fine, heat works and the radiator electric fan cycles as normal. Is there a sensor just for this gauge and if so where is it located. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It does have a seperate sending unit just for the gauge. What size engine is it?
