1997 Oldsmobile 88, 3.8L, running rough uphill
I have a 1997 olds 88 with a 3.8L and 120,000 miles on it and I live in Central Indiana. My car has always ran just alittle rough at idle from time to time but nothing major (no jerking or shaking or back firing). Just recently it started running really rough when going uphill. This only happen when I am at a speed of around 55 and when I start going up a hill and I press the gas pedel down.

What it does is, shake and just miss out until it kicks down out of Overdrive. Once it kicks down and the RPM's go up, it runs good. It doesn't do this on flat ground when I try to speed up and it doesn't do this when I am going up a hill at a low rate of speed and try to speed up.

It is showing no codes and my SES light turns on when I turn the car on so I know its working. I have no idea where to even start looking because I have never experienced this type of problem before. Any help would be great!! Thank you

RE: 1997 Oldsmobile 88, 3.8L, running rough uphill
You most likely have a miss that you can’t feel until the torque locks up. If it hasn’t had a tune up in a while you might want to start there. You could also wait for it to get worse, turn on the SES light, and then do a scan.

Please let us know what you find.
