Jetta Gear Problem
my car will not move in gear it will only drive in neutral it is a 2000 jetta. i tried adjusting the shifting linkage it of course didnt work kinda lost here its our only car and my wife has doctors appointments for personal issues. i need my car and i dont know what to do.

You need to sort it out to either a linkage problem or a trany problem, which may require a helper. (more later)

Recalling that's a solid linkage between the floor shifter and the trany so a few things to look at are the bushings at each pivot point and anything that may be bent, which will change the geometry of everything. (did you drive over something recently?) The other thing to look at is the engine mounts. If they are worn and the engine is leaning to one side or the other that can also screw up the shift linkage.

Now I have to ask, are the other gears there but not in the right place? Can you shift to low or reverse by fooling around with the shifter? This is where a helper may come in handy. With the car raised (and properly supported) you might going through the gears while you watch from underneith or try disconnecting the shifter and moving the linkage by hand to see if you can find the other gears and at that point at least you know it's not the trany.

Let us know what you find and maybe we can offer more suggestions.
