Gear shifter stuck

Gear shifter stuck
I've a 2005 Kia Spectra5 with 77,000 miles. For the last several weeks each morning my gear shifter is stuck/locked in park. I have to bang, bang on release button for more than 30mins before it releases. Please, Please some body help I'm in NY and its COLD outside.SadSadSad

The gear shift is held via a solenoid that is powered through the brake pedal and with the key on you should hear a click each time you step on the brakes. If you don't hear the click (down by the shifter) then there is either no power (bad switch at the pedal) or bad solenoid at the shifter has failed. (not likely) The most common problem is that something has gone down in that area to foul up the works. IOW, pocket change, paper clips, hair pins, or spilled coffee, soda, etc. Teh only way to find out is to take things apart and look.

Let us know how you make out.

BTW, here in Ct we hit single digits last night and both of my cars are outside. (burrrr!)
