sounds like to me that you have a bad fuel pump.

RE: 1986 audi 5000s 5 cylinder
Good call there Sandman! I haven't seen one of these in 20 years and I didn't know there were any still around.

My best guess is if the car is that old (26 years?) then it's been sitting in a garage for a LONG time and the pump is fouled with stale gas. The injectors may also be stuck closed for the same reason. (Bosch injectors will do that)

Now, in a pinch maybe sitting for a few days with fresh gas and some injector cleaner in the tank it may free up, especially if someone crawls under it and smacks the tank with a rubber hammer a few times. OTOH, if that doesn't get things going then it's time for a proper diagnosis. IOW, fuel pressure test, possible electrical testing to see if the pump is getting power, and then go from there. If you get fuel to the rail then it's time to see if the injectors are actually triggering.

I would also look the car over for rust in critical places (frame rails and floors in particular) BEFORE throwing any serious money into it. These cars were prone to hidden rust even years ago.

Let us know how you make out.
