aluminum block cleaning
What is the best way to clean trhe block on my 2001 CRV so I can get it ready for the head gasket? and how clean must it be?

If you mean the actual gasket surface it must be clean down to the bare metal without gouging it. You can use razor blades or special gasket scrapers as long as you are careful. There are also a variety of cleaning discs made by 3M for this purpose that attach to your shop drill. Do not work a single area too long as these products can remove metal if you are not careful. When used correctly they can make short work of this job and leave a nice clean surface.
