RE: 1998 jetta gear problem
Stopped working?

If it's a manual trany, do you mean it pops out of gear, grinds, slips, cant't get it into gear? Any odd noise? Does the engine race while the car goes slower? What about the other gears? (including reverse) It it hard to get it into other gears or easy?

Give us a bit more to go on.

RE: 1998 jetta gear problem
When I try to put it into fifth gear it's like it disappeared. It just goes into third instead. The other gears all work. Sometimes they grind a little but other than that it's pretty normal.

RE: 1998 jetta gear problem
Ahhh, now that's a better explaination.

Most likely the shift linkage bushings are worn so there is too much slack. The shifter itself probably "wiggles" all over the place in every gear position. I could say the job is as easy as installing new bushings but that's not something you find out till you take it apart. Sometimes it's been so worn for so long that the area where the bushings go is also worn to a point where the new bushing will "float" in place. I suspect you will need to get under the car (properly supported for safety) and actually remove this linkage to see exactly what's needed.

Let us know how you make out.
