Saturn VUE 2003 speedometer not working
I bought a 2003 saturn vue 4 cyl. standard: problem is the speedometer and odometer do not work. The people I bought it from say it is the ECM and have a new one. They put it in but made the engine run badly so took it out and put original back in. Say it needs to be flashed. Engine runs a little rough now. Would it be the ECM that would fix speedometer or is it the BCM?

RE: Saturn VUE 2003 speedometer not working
Changing the ECM will make it run a bit rough till you drive it and it "learns" from going through a hot / cold cycle. I doubt the ECM has anything to do with the speedo and I don't think the speedo has anything to do with the BCM either.

I work with a guy who is sharp with Saturn so I will try to remember to ask him tomorrow.

RE: Saturn VUE 2003 speedometer not working
OK, talked with my buddy today and he worked for the dealer for many years. He said it's most likely the dash cluster itself, although there's a slight possibility of the BCM being an issue. He said the fastest way to get a handle on it would be to hook up a full function scanner then go to live readings and see if that will detect road speed. A quick spin in the parking lot will do for this test.

A few other things he mentioned is the speedometer looks like an analog gauge but actually digital with no cable. The odometer is an LCD with a back light. (read: bulb) If the bulb burns out you can't see the mileage, although possibly a bit dim with a good flashlight. If the mileage reads something off the wall, say 785,000 miles, it might be the BCM. Seems they were also an issue for that era.

He also said if it's the dash cluster (speedo, odo, and tach) you can probably use something from a salvage yard because the actual info (mileage) is stored in the BCM. If the BCM itself is bad that needs to come from a dealer and needs to be programed to the specific vehicle.

Good luck and let us know what you find!
