Timing Chain Setup
We have a 97 Passat. It has the vr6 motor.12 valve. The head gasket blew so we son started taking it apart.Got it all apart and getting ready to put back together and one repair site said we have to take both the engine and transmission out separate them to get the timing chains aligned.
Seems crazy but I sure hope this isn't right. Is there a way to get this back together without all that? Thanks |

RE: Timing Chain Setup
Yeah, guess I missed that so here's my best shot since I kinda retired from VW shortly after the Rabbit diesel was popular.... and maybe a few Jetta timing belts later on.
Found this and maybe reading of some comments will help more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj1k0-aYp5Q Since I don't know if there's a balance shaft in this motor I can't say for sure if there's anything other than being in the right positions while setting up the chain timing to the cams. This video covers the basics of changing the chain guides so at least gives you an idea of what's involved in timing the beast. Let us know how you make out. |
