Pontiac Sunfire squeeking noise
Hello all. I am completely stumped what could be wrong with my car,and I don't have the money for repairs at the moment, and I can't stop worrying that my steering is going to go any day now. The steering FEELS fine, not tight or anything like that. It doesn't make any clunking noises or anything either. But when I turn the wheel, especially at slow speeds,it makes a grinding/squeeking noise, sounds more like metal grinding than rubber, etc. But I could be wrong. It also will make the sound if I park and turn the wheels back and forth (did this just to test and see if it did it when not moving). It also makes the same exact noise when I make a sudden stop,or if I am stopped on a hill, and the motion of me starting moving again will cause the noise. I live on the lower part of a hilll and it will also do it after I park and turn the car off,and when I let off the brake and the car settles back. I can make the noise drag out longer if I park and turn the wheel very slowly,or make it do it quickly if I turn the wheel fast. The only other odd thing that I noticed is that the steering wheel doesn't go back to center completely after a turn, and I know its supposed to. It may have been like that a long time though,I am just paying extra attention now to any odd things so I can try to figure out my problem. Any ideas what I might be looking at would be helpful. All i can do right now is worry myself senseless,my kids need school clothes before school starts in two weeks,so the car has to wait.

I would just guess that it is a strut, ball joint or a brake problem. If you are mechanically inclined and have tools we could tell you how to check it out. If not, you really need to have it looked at! Will the kids get their clothes if you are killed in a car accident? Will the kids be in the car? Think about your safety and the kids as well as those around you. I would hate to hear that someone got hurt.

Thanks for using the forum,
Garner

RE: Pontiac Sunfire squeeking noise
Just to add my 2 cents, that car has both power steering and I believe hydro-boost brakes so the noise may be from the fluid in the pump being low, but not so low that you would notice anything besides the noise. Easy enough to check and only a few bucks ($5?) to get more fluid. If this solves the problem for the moment then at least you have bought a bit of time and you can get the real repair done down the road.

If you are not sure where to check or add fluid then seek local advice or check your owner's manual. Putting the wrong fluid in the wrong place can cost you a fortune in the long run.

Let us know how you make out.
