To buy or not
I'm looking at a 94 Infiniti that has been sitting in a drive way for about 4 years. Its been started only a few times. Would like to know if the seals would crack or be deteriated from sitting for so long? Engine is in good shape, kicks right over with a jump and runs good.
Thanking you in advance for your reply. (The owner only wants $800. for it)Big Grin

RE: To buy or not
Hard to say exactly what will pop up in a 14 year old car and most of that will depend on how it was maintained prevously.

Kelly Blue Book shows a Q45 in fair condition (needs some work) with 120K miles for just over $2K. (private party sale)

Two things to consider here are that his asking price seems reasonable and the balance of the fair private party price could be used to off set some future expense.

The other part to figure into the deal is that Infinity parts are generally not cheap so you could very well drop a considerable amount into the car in short order.

What this all boils down to is the age old question.... can you get a better set of wheels for the money when those first two factors are considered together?

(pay me now or pay me later?)

If you did pay it, I would change all the fluids to start with. Get a fresh start. Have the trans fluid flushed and add some seal conditioner. Sounds like a good price.

RE: To buy or not
Thank you Rupe for your reply, however I'm still wondering if this car (or any car) thats been sitting for so long, would have cracked seals? Or are they (Infiniti's) manufactored to the extent that the seals might be o.k. ? Nothing has been done to it except started on occasion...and not that often. Thanks again for your reply. P.S. No leaks underneath showing on the driveway.

RE: To buy or not
To answer the cracked seal question more directly, chances are that if everything is dry now there will ok for the near future.

Cracked seals generally come from heat more than old age these days as the seals themselves are not made of rubber or rope but are synthetic composits.  In the old days the seals would dry up from just hanging around. This is probably a left over myth, which dates back several decades by now.  The last production car that I know of to use a rope seal was the GM 350 diesel of the mid 70's vintage.

BTW, to clarify what I stated earlier about "pay me now or pay me later" the idea is not to think of this as an $800 car. There's no such thing. Think of this as a car you paid $2,000 for and the first payment is $800.

What I'm driving at is there will likely be other expenses. (and there is no free lunch)

Good luck!

Rupe

RE: To buy or not
Its a used car for sale because somebody did not want it anymore . was it because they just wanted a new ride ,OR , was it somebody dumped it because it was about to morph into the car from hell . I generally shy away from used luxury cars because the parts really get pricey as the years go by . the more you know about the history of car the better.
