broken gas gauge?
hey guys,

I have a 1976 cadillac eldorado, and my gas gauge is always reading full. once I turn the key the needle goes as far as it possibly can and doesn't move until I shut the car off and it goes back down to empty. I noticed it after I replaced my rear air shocks, don't think that has to do with it but that's when I noticed it.

I ran some lucas brand fuel line cleaner through it the day before that though, it worked fine after I was done working on it then but the next day it was doing this. does anyone have any ideas on what it is and how to fix it?

Thanks guys!

RE: broken gas gauge?
It sounds like the wire to the gauge is shorted to ground. I would suspect the area that you were working on the shocks. Look for a place where the wires got pinched, rubbed, or that the jack got up against them and crushed them. If a torch was used look for melting. If looking in that area doesn’t work you will need to start at one end of the wires and follow them looking for damage as you work to the other end.

Please let us know what you find as it may help others.

Thanks for using the forum,
Garner

RE: broken gas gauge?
Turns out it was a simple fix. I lifted up the license plate to make sure my new air shocks were holding air, and I noticed there was a wire unplugged right next to the air shock nozzle. I plugged it back in and now the gauge works. Thank you for your help!

Geez, I almost forgot about the days when you flipped the license plate to fill the tank. What a flash back.

Thanks for the follow up!
